Do soft gamma repeaters emit gravitational waves ?

چکیده

Soft gamma repeaters are identified as highly magnetized (B≈ 10 14 Gauss) neutron stars. Magnetic stresses induce tectonic activity, and field annihilation in faults is the ultimate energy source for the observed γ-ray emission. As a consequence of the crustal cracking, the stored elastic energy is converted into high frequency (kHz) shear waves, that excite nonradial oscillation modes damped by gravitational wave emission. This class of objects should certainly be considered as potential sources of gravitational waves that could be detected by the present planned interferometric antennas like VIRGO or LIGO.

Gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries with magnetic dipole moments

We investigate the effects of the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling and the electromagnetic radiation on the frequency evolution of gravitational waves from inspiralling binary neutron stars with magnetic dipole moments. This study is motivated by the discovery of the superstrongly magnetized neutron stars, i.e., magnetar. We derive the contributions of the magnetic fields to the accumulated cycl...

Magnetic Deformation of Magnetars for the Giant Flares of the Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters

We present one possible mechanism for the giant flares of the Soft GammaRay Repeaters (SGRs) within the framework of magnetar, i.e., superstrongly magnetized neutron star model, motivated by the positive period increase associated with the August 27 event from SGR 1900+14. We assume that the global reconfiguration of the internal magnetic field suddenly occurs. Then, the shape of the star is de...

Searching for Gravitational-Wave Bursts with LIGO

We present recent results from searches by the LIGO Science Collaboration for bursts of gravitational-wave radiation, as well as the status of other ongoing searches. These include directed searches for bursts associated with observed sources (gamma-ray bursts, soft gamma repeaters) and untriggered searches for bursts from unknown sources. We also present the status of some newer investigations...

Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars: Magnetar Candidates

Baade & Zwicky (1934) were the first to envision the formation of neutron stars as the end product of a supernova explosion. Their forward thinking was not vindicated for another three decades, with the discovery of the first radio pulsars by Bell and Hewish (Hewish et al. 1968). What Baade and Zwicky could not have anticipated, however, was the menagerie of astrophysical objects that are now a...
